What does it actually take to become a working writer?

I didn’t get published on talent alone. I got there with help. Honest feedback. Strategic guidance. A willingness to rewrite when it would’ve been easier to quit.

If you’re serious about this, you already know the industry is competitive. You know finishing a manuscript is only the beginning. The real work is refining your voice, strengthening your story, and understanding where your work fits.

Through Unbound Coaching, I’ve worked with writers at every stage. Some are drafting their first novel. Others are preparing to query or level up an existing career. My role is simple. Help you see your work clearly. Push you where you need to be pushed. Support you where you need to be steadier.

Coaching can include full-manuscript developmental feedback, ongoing accountability sessions, or focused strategy calls. It depends on what your project demands.

If you’re ready to treat your writing like it job, not a hobby, let’s talk.

Professional Writing Coaching for Committed Writers

Targeted coaching designed to strengthen your voice, your manuscript, and your career.

  • Unfiltered, thoughtful feedback that strengthens the spine of your story. We’ll examine pacing, stakes, character psychology, and narrative drive so your manuscript feels sharper, more cohesive, and emotionally grounded from beginning to end.

  • Strategic, market-aware query letters that clearly position your book and your voice. We’ll refine your pitch for clarity, momentum, and impact so agents understand exactly what makes your story compelling.

  • Build a focused, sustainable author presence rooted in clarity and authenticity. We’ll identify where your energy belongs, refine your messaging, and create a strategy that supports your long-term career without burning you out.

  • Strategic, experience-driven guidance to plan and execute a focused launch. We’ll prioritize what actually builds visibility, strengthens your positioning, and sustains momentum beyond release week.

  • Structured check-ins and clear benchmarks to keep you moving forward. Consistent pressure, steady progress, and a finished manuscript instead of another stalled draft.

  • Practical mindset work to move past resistance, handle rejection, quiet self-doubt, and build a writing routine that fits your real life. Strengthen the discipline and identity required to sustain a long-term writing career.

  • Strategic preparation to clarify your message, strengthen your delivery, and show up with authentic confidence. Learn how to communicate your work with clarity and presence so visibility feels organic, not forced.

  • Strategic insight into the traditional publishing process, from querying and agent conversations to contracts, timelines, and positioning. Clear perspective so you can move forward with confidence and avoid costly missteps.

  • Define the direction of your work and the kind of writer you intend to become. Clarify your priorities so your decisions, projects, and daily writing habits align with a larger plan.

How Coaching Works

Coaching is tailored to your manuscript and your goals. And though I offer the complete range of services listed above. most writers work with me in one of four ways:

Developmental Manuscript Work
Full or partial manuscript review with detailed, professional feedback focused on structure, pacing, character depth, and emotional impact. Deliverable includes a highly-detailed review letter. A sample is available upon request.

Query Strategy & Letter Revision
Refined, market-aware query letters that clarify your hook, sharpen your positioning, and present your work with confidence.

Accountability Coaching
Ongoing one-on-one sessions designed to create consistent progress, clear benchmarks, and forward momentum.

Media, Visibility & Public Speaking Preparation
Strategic preparation to refine your message and strengthen your presence onstage, on camera, or in interviews.

I’ll identify the right structure during your initial consultation and define a focused plan before any work begins.

Investment

One-on-one coaching is $175 per hour.

For larger projects such as full-manuscript developmental reviews, I provide a clear estimate in advance based on length and scope. That estimate is a not-to-exceed number.

If the work takes less time than projected, you pay less. If it takes more time, you do not pay beyond the quoted estimate. There are no surprise invoices.

As a reference point, developmental editing of an 80,000-word manuscript with a comprehensive review letter typically requires 9–12 hours.

What My Clients Are Saying

  • Jay Medailleu | Writer

I had planned on making a financial investment in my writing for some time but hadn't figured out what that should look like — and then I learned about Carter and Unbound Writer and thought, "What better way than to work with someone who has done the exact thing I want to do?" The feedback, both the things that worked well and the things that needed work (because there are always those!) surpassed my expectations, and being able to talk these things through with Carter was invaluable. In our Zoom "debriefing" call, he helped me fix a fatal flaw in the early pages of my manuscript, and then gave me an impromptu tutorial on virtual pitching. Best of all, Carter genuinely cares about my goals and truly wants me to succeed, which is the thing I didn't realize I needed. I look forward to continuing to work and grow with him.

  • T.O. Paine | Award-Winning Suspense Author

Carter Wilson's coaching through Unbound Writer accelerated the success of my author career, easily taking several years off my original goals. His genuine and uplifting approach to coaching along with his vast experience in writing and publishing saved me a ton of time, allowing me to avoid learning via trial and error. I wish I’d started working with Carter years earlier.

  • Brad Himelsteins | Writer

Carter highlighted the parts of my WIP that needed work and gave helpful guidance on improvement. Receiving feedback can often be deflating, yet Carter manages to give it in a way that boosts your confidence. The overall experience was very positive.

  • Erik Hale | author of "All the Brittle Pieces"

Carter reviewed my manuscript and provided detailed, grounded, and meaningful ways that I can improve my narrative and strengthen my characters. His feedback and coaching were really helpful and I’m using his advice to rewrite my manuscript before I send it out to agents. If you are looking to get serious about your writing and have hopes of landing an agent I highly recommend letting Carter review your work to bring it to the next level.

  • Lauren Wells | Writer

Not only did Carter’s insightful feedback inspire me to take a fresh look at my passion project, his openness in speaking with me about writing and being an author made me feel like I have someone in my corner to support me in my own career.

  • Gaby Montiel | Novelist, Singer, Songwriter

I am so grateful to have received this coaching. Without it, I would still be stuck on chapter one of a project I never enjoyed in the first place. This coaching not only laid out my work in a way I had never thought of before, but also caused me to find the root of my inspiration in writing and understand where my voice truly came from. I am now working on a project I love and am quickly filling up pages that had been blank before.

Write better. Think clearer. Get unstuck.
